We provide general acute hospital services to approximately 500,000 people from Coventry and Rugby and specialist hospital services to over one million people from Coventry, Warwickshire and beyond. The Trust has a revenue budget of approximately £473 million, we employ 5,639 staff, manage 1,380 beds and 32 operating theatres.

The Trust is made up of the following hospitals:
University Hospital Coventry
Hospital of St Cross – Rugby

Applications are invited for an enthusiastic Stroke Physician to join the existing dynamic stroke team at University Hospital, Coventry.

This is a permanent post however we will consider applications for a Locum Consultant post for a 12 month duration if a substantive appointment is not made. There is a separate person specification attached for individuals wishing to apply for the locum post.  Please specify on your application which post you wish to be considered for.

The successful candidate will work alongside 3 stroke physicians (2 geriatricians and 1 neurologist) and the post sits within the department of Neurosciences (which includes Neurology, Neurosurgery, Neurorehabilitation, Neuropsychology and Neurophysiology).

The consultant team is supported by 1 specialty doctor, 1 rotational gerontology registrar, 1 rotational neurology registrar and 4 ward based trust grade doctors. Band 5 and 6 stroke nurses assist with thrombolysis on a 24/7 basis and there is a full time stroke co-ordinator and a data clerk. There is a large therapy team with 7 day physiotherapy and occupational therapy and a newly formed ESD team.

There is a well established acute stroke service with a 6 bedded HASU. We admit around 850 patients a year and thrombolyse around 150 patients. An thrombectomy service is being developed. The stroke unit also has a 30 bedded acute/rehabilitation unit.

A dedicated 'one stop' acute TIA clinic runs 7 days a week supported by a daily, on site carotid ultrasound service and access to urgent MRI and urgent, on site, vascular surgery if needed.

The successful candidate will take part in the daytime acute stroke on-call cover and participate in running the day to day activities such as ward rounds and MDTs on the stroke ward and running acute TIA clinics and stroke follow up clinics. The department’s educational activities include an academic afternoon and regular stroke audit/radiology MDTs.

There is ample support on site by Neurology, Neurosurgery, Neuroradiology, Neurological Rehabilitation and Psychology.

The Coventry & Warwickshire stroke pathway is currently being redesigned in conjunction with our 3 partner CCGs and acute provider Trusts to enable centralisation of stroke and TIA services on the University Hospital site. Currently our stroke out of hours service is provided by 7 WTE consultant neurologists and there is an expectation that the post holder will join the out of hours rota in the future.

Applicants must be fully registered with the GMC and hold a suitable parent specialty CCT or be within 6 months of the CCT being awarded at the time of interview. In light of the pathway redesign taking shape over the next 12 months there is huge opportunity for the post holder to actively shape the future of stroke services in the region.
